A unique multi-sensory experience that will stay with you. All welcome.
“I saw this and said we have to have that in Gloucester. It took my breath away. The music, the performance, it’s absolutely beautiful”
– Halima Malek
What to expect
A magical experience on a dark October night. A feast for your ears, eyes (and stomach)! A fusion of Indian dance, street food, stirring music and video projection in an amazing setting.

Step into Blackfriars, a beautiful space that’s often reserved for weddings and exclusive gatherings. But this is a relaxed event, open to everyone.
As you come in, you’ll be handed a pair of headphones – to bring the soundtrack of Igor Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ direct to your ears, for that up-close sound. It’s a famously powerful and striking piece of music.

Find a seat in the high-ceilinged stone hall that you like the look of (you’ll be able to move around throughout the evening). Then watch incredibly skilled, elegant Indian dance projected on to the walls – above your head and all around you.

Seeta Patel’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ is a reimagining of Igor Stravinsky’s iconic ballet in the Bharatanatyam dance style, performed by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
The music and dance projection will play for about 40 minutes. In that time, you’re welcome to move around the space, sit or stand where you like, watch as much as you’re interested in, have a chat outside, close your eyes and just lose yourself in the sound – whatever you like.
There’ll also be a live performance from a local Bharatanatyam dance group.
And we’ll have outdoor firepits and food available, so you are very welcome to stay and chat and eat afterwards, too.

Getting here
This event is happening for ONE NIGHT ONLY! At Blackfriars Priory on Tuesday 3 October 2023, 6.30pm
Blackfriars is a landmark medieval building in the Gloucester City – GL1 2HN. There are nearby bus stops for routes 8, 10, 12, 23 and 32. If you need to drive, there are nearby car parks on Longsmith Street and Southgate Street.
Money
The event is free to attend (donations welcome) – but spaces are limited so you do need to book your place. Food will be available to buy on site (at non-extortionate prices!)
This event is free so that everyone can attend – but we are a charity and rely on donations to keep putting on events like this. Any amount you can give is hugely appreciated!
Access
Seats will be provided for all audience members. You will be able to choose your seat on a first-come, first-served basis – but the projection happens on all 4 walls of the venue, so all seats should have a good view. You will also be able to move around and explore different viewpoints during the performance.
The projection will happen in the large main hall (‘the North Range’) of Blackfriars Priory. The venue is on the ground floor and accessible by wheelchair. There is comprehensive information, including photos of the access routes, available on the Access Glos website.
The projection performance has no dialogue. The music will be played through over-ear headphones.
What to wear
Come as you are: there’s no dress code – turn up in whatever you are comfortable wearing. BUT you will want to wrap up warm. It will be an October evening in an old stone building, so it will probably be cold.
