What’s the placement role?

We are looking for a youth theatre practitioner from the Global Majority who is looking to develop their skills in producing within our Participation Department.

You don’t need to have lots of previous experience in producing or to have done a similar role. You’ll also be an important part of a small team, so you’ll get to shape your work and influence decisions. Your voice in the room and creative energy will help us and, in return, we promise to make this a fun and welcoming place to develop your skills and hopefully your career prospects. You will learn from us and our brilliant group of practitioners and producers and we will also learn from you.

You will work closely with, and be managed by, our Head of Participation – Charlene Olaleye.

Placement purpose and responsibilities

You’ll get to both deliver youth theatre sessions AND work on your choice of a wide range of projects.

Our participation work has grown significantly over the last three years and is one of the core strands of delivery within Strike A Light. This year alone the young people we work with have created performances with ACE Dance and Music, Mulit-Story Orchestra, Ockham’s Razor, and have had opportunities to perform in a National Theatre Connections Festival and a Youth Dance Platform to name a few. There is huge scope for you to have a wide range of projects to work on as well as lead the weekly theatre groups.

Main activities:

No two days are the same, so we can’t give you an exact running schedule. In practice, you’ll be doing things like:

• Deliver youth theatre sessions for young people as part of projects and classes.
• Work with the Head of Participation to oversee the weekly groups and plan and devise participation activity
• Ensure all requirements for delivery are booked and sourced e.g. room hire, equipment etc.
• Recruit and engage with young people to encourage them to take part in activities, with a particular focus on young people from Global Majority and harder to reach young people
• Build mutually beneficial working relationships with schools, youth groups, community leaders and other partners
• Ensure the smooth day-to-day running of activities, working to health and safety and child protection best practice including registers, media release, accident and incident reporting, staff briefings.
• Be the first point of contact for parents/ carers, young people, tutors and others regarding Strike A Light’s weekly participation activity.
• Facilitate a positive, professional and creative atmosphere for young people taking part in participation activities
• Observe and implement Strike A Light’s policies and procedures including equal opportunities, health and safety and child protection and safeguarding.
• Represent Strike A Light at events where appropriate
• Any other duties appropriate to the post and organisation
• Work within Strike A Light’s policies, including Health & Safety, Child Protection and Equalities
• Participate in organisation meetings and events as required
• Attend relevant training as and when required

Fee: £11,200 PT (£28,000 FTE). We anticipate that this placement will equate to approximately 2 days per week.

Contract: this role is offered as PAYE contract and is offered on a fixed term basis that has been funded until June 2026 as a scheme supported by Paul Hamlyn In line with our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy the successful candidate will be given a conditional offer, subject to references and a satisfactory DBS check.

Essential

• A person from the global majority
• Passion for working with young people
• Experience of engaging and supporting young people taking part in activities
• A practitioner specialism in theatre
• Experience in devising and creating youth arts projects
• An enthusiasm for contemporary performance
• Ability to manage and prioritise own workload and work with efficiency and initiative
• Ability to build positive, empathetic relationships with young people whilst maintaining a professional and appropriate role.
• Understanding of arts and/or education activity in a community setting
• Proficient IT skills
• Understanding of best practice when working with children, young people and vulnerable adults
• A positive, creative, flexible, hands on and can-do approach
• A commitment to diversity and inclusion

Desirable

• Knowledge of Gloucester community groups, organisations and potential partners
• Experience of creating and managing budgets
• Full clean driving licence

As per our child protection policy and Disclosure and Barring Service guidelines, the post holder will undertake a DBS check.
