strike a light in schools

3 terms of theatre, dance & music // Great quality artists creating new work with kids // Gloucester primary schools

what is it?

Strike A Light in Schools is a year-long programme aimed at forming a better relationship with the arts and primary schools in Gloucester.

We bring exceptional artists to education for three terms of theatre, music and dance, and the sessions surround raising confidence, aspiration and wellbeing in children living in areas of high deprivation.

“We are really appreciative of all that Strike A Light did and what they managed to bring out of our kids”

The Activity

Our processes consist of partnering with schools to offer three terms of cultural practice in Theatre, Music and Dance.

Then, we introduce and connect them with high quality national companies and artists who will work with the children to co-create pieces of art (previously this has included Multi-Story Orchestra, ACE Dance and Music and Kid Carpet).

Through the activity, the children have access to 2 hours of high-quality culture provision a week – free of charge.

“I think I’ve grown in knowledge and thinking on the spot”

Impact

We strive to create welcoming, safe and supporting atmospheres in the sessions for children and young people as they work through difficult emotions, build relationships and develop their coping skills.

We’ve seen that shaping these spaces allows the participants the unique opportunity of working with world-class and industry standard professionals over a sustained period; developing their skills, confidence and pride in their work.
