Who can apply?

  • Global Majority artists/led companies
  • professional artists/companies – which means that you are engaged in your artistic pursuits and perhaps trained for them. You should be known for that work, and earn income from it
  • artists who aren’t necessarily in difficult financial circumstances or dire straits, have insufficient income or resources generally to be able to afford to subsidise the time and place away from home necessary to fulfil their work or take a break from it, and specifically to pay for an artists residency
  • through our ‘Gloucester Presents’ model we work with people in Gloucester who are often under-represented: LGBTQ+, working class, disabled, neuro-diverse or those with a long term/chronic health condition. we’ve seen the difference it can make if the artists we work with share some of those lived experiences, so are particularly interested in building relationships with these artists through our residency schemes

What should I include in the application?

  • Please talk to us like one human being to another! Write like you speak – we don’t want big words or impressive phrases, we just want to get a sense for what you’re actually like and what you actually want to do.
  • We are keen to build relationships with artists who connect with the Strike A Light’s 7 principles so would like to hear in any of these are particularly meaningful to you or if you work in a similar way.

How many spaces are there?

  • we have space available for 12 artists
  • individual artists and groups (up to 6 people) are welcome to apply

Is there anything expected of the artists in return?

  • we ask that the artists write a short blog (or create a short film/voice notes) during or after the residency describing the residency, talking about what they’ve been working on etc. These may be published on Hawkwood’s & Strike A Light’s websites
  • we will expect all artists selected to complete a feedback form after the residency
