My Time as an Assistant Producer at Strike A Light
When I first stepped into the role of Assistant Producer at Strike A Light, I wasn’t entirely sure if producing was the right path for me. I’ve always been on the performer side of the theatre world, and the idea of swapping the stage for behind-the-scenes work felt both exciting and unfamiliar. But from the moment I arrived for my interview, I knew Strike A Light was different. The warmth of the team, the genuine passion in the room, and the supportive energy made me feel instantly at home. It felt like a place where I could learn, grow, and belong.
Blackfriars Dance Takeover: Diving Straight In
One of my very first projects was the Blackfriars Dance Takeover, and what an introduction it was. I dived straight in, welcoming performers into the space, helping them settle, and organising firepits, Turkish tea, and roasted marshmallows for everyone to enjoy. As someone used to being a performer myself, it was eye-opening to experience the producing side so closely.
Getting to support artists rather than be the artist gave me a newfound appreciation for the care, planning, and invisible work that happens long before an audience arrives. Throughout this event, I also had the chance to work with external technicians, observe the recruitment process, liaise around access needs, assist with documentation, and gather audience feedback forms. All these small but significant tasks showed me the amount of thought and coordination that goes into making an event run smoothly and inclusively.
Seeing people come together to celebrate local performances and hearing how thrilled they were, asking for more events like this in Gloucester, reminded me how much these artistic moments matter to the community.
Accessibility at the Heart of the Work
One of the things that has stood out to me the most during my time at Strike A Light is the company’s genuine commitment to accessibility. From closed captions to accessible seating arrangements, and the brilliant pay-what-you-can scheme, every effort is made to ensure that everyone has a fair and equal opportunity to experience the performances.
Being part of an organisation that actively removes barriers, financial, physical, and social, has been truly inspiring. It’s something I believe is vital for the future of the arts, especially in a city like Gloucester where community access can make all the difference.
A Highlight: Working on The Endz with Multi-Story Orchestra
Another unforgettable experience was working with the Multi-Story Orchestra on their production of The Endz. The performance was phenomenal, powerful, moving, and filled with a message that felt so important to share. I felt genuinely honoured to be part of the team bringing this event to life in my hometown.
Watching people from Gloucester come together to witness such a meaningful performance filled me with pride. Moments like these are why Strike A Light’s work feels so essential for the city.
Learning Across the Whole Company
My placement wasn’t limited to producing tasks. I had the opportunity to engage with several other departments within the organisation. I spent time with the marketing team, worked alongside the wonderful community producers, learned about budgeting, helped with risk assessments, and witnessed the early stages of developing new projects. I also became part of the front-of-house team, which gave me a fuller understanding of the audience experience.
Each of these experiences stretched my skills and broadened my understanding of how a production comes to life, from the spark of an idea to the moment the audience enters the room.
A Supportive Team and a Hopeful Path Forward
What I will cherish most from my time at Strike A Light is the incredible office ethos. Everyone is genuinely supportive, encouraging, and invested in helping you grow. The environment feels safe, creative, and full of possibility.
Being part of this team has given me real hope for my own future in producing, especially here in Gloucester. I truly believe that the city needs these performances, these spaces for community and creativity, and these moments of connection that Strike A Light continues to bring to life.
